Background of the Study
Instagram story captions are a dynamic blend of visual and textual communication that have led to unique morphological and syntactic adaptations in Nigerian digital discourse. Visual narratives encourage users to create captions that are not only informative but also artistically aligned with the accompanying images. This interaction often results in the alteration of conventional word forms, with users employing creative abbreviations, blended words, and re‑spelling to enhance visual impact (Oluwaseun, 2023). The brevity and ephemeral nature of Instagram stories further compel users to innovate linguistically. As a result, morphosyntactic structures are transformed, reflecting a fusion of traditional language with digital creativity. This study explores how Instagram story captions serve as a medium for morphological adaptation, revealing the interplay between visual context and language innovation in Nigeria. The research also considers how these adaptations mirror broader cultural and technological influences, ultimately contributing to a redefinition of language norms in digital environments (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the rise of Instagram story captions as a popular medium of communication in Nigeria, there is limited empirical research on how visual narratives drive morphological adaptation. Traditional linguistic frameworks struggle to accommodate the innovative word formations and syntactic deviations observed in this digital context. This research gap restricts our understanding of the influence of visual elements on language evolution and the mechanisms behind digital morphosyntactic change. Without a systematic investigation into these phenomena, the broader implications for language use in multimedia environments remain unclear, hindering effective integration of digital literacy into educational and media practices (Chukwu, 2023).
